Big Things

Australians are very proud of the fact that they have a lot of 'the biggest' things in either The World or the Southern Hemisphere. For example, Fraser island is the biggest sand island in the world. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system in the world with over 900 islands. You get the picture??? Some Australian towns however go one step further and like to celebrate this 'BIG' status by building BIG objects, which reflect things unique to their town/region.

As we have travelled around Australia over the past 6 years we have come across a lot of these 'BIG' things and thought we would share those that we come across whilst on our current travels. This custom is uniquely Australian and deserves to be shared.

The Oyster, masquerading as a car show room - Taree NSW
The Big Banana - Coffs Harbour NSW. No guessing what they grow in this region??
The Prawn, located above a Fish 'n' Chip shop - Ballina NSW
The Big Avocado can be found at Tropical Fruit World, near Tweed Heads on the NSW north coast. We bought one and it took over 2 weeks to ripen!
The Big Shell, Noosa - this was actually the entrance to a Tropical Homewares shop.
Not strictly a 'Big Thing'. But this big shark's mouth is the entrance to a Shark Museum in Airlie Beach and we it thought warranted an inclusion.
The Big Mango at Bowen. This 10 metre high mango, cost approximately $90,000 to design, construct and erect - enough said!!
Obviously an advertising gimmick! The Big Mud Crab in Cardwell, Qld.
Tully in Tropical North Queensland is the wettest town in Australia. This giant gum boot stands at 7.9 meters tall, reflecting the most amount of rain the town received in one year!!
The Cassowary is a large flightless bird which only inhabits the tropical rainforests that fringe the coastline from Mission Beach to The Daintree. They are now an endangered species and it is thought that there may be as little as 1000 left in the wild. Thus the only one we managed to photograph was this 'big' tribute.
The 'Marlin; the fantasy of every offshore fisherman. This one appeared outside a shopping centre for no apparent reason; sometimes they just get too carried away.
Barramundi is one of the most sought after sport fish by anglers in Queensland. This one is perched atop a restaurant in Daintree.
